The 2024 Presidential Election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5 and will be the 60th quadrennial election in United States history.
Former President Donald Trump is running on behalf of the Republican Party, alongside Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate. His win in this election would mean the first nonconsecutive presidential term since Grover Cleveland.
In the Democratic Party, Kamala Harris is running alongside Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota. Originally, President Joe Biden was the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee, but he dropped out of the race on July 21, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president. If she is elected, she will become the first female president in U.S. history.
In terms of education policy, Trump wants to eliminate the Department of Education and let local and state legislation deal with education. Trump is also pushing to reduce student loan forgiveness, arguing that debt relief is unfair to people who paid off their student loans with their own money.
Harris believes in increased pay for teachers and declared in her kickoff campaign that she would guarantee universal preschool education and debt-free college. In regards to student loans, Harris supports the Biden Administration’s plan for debt relief, specifically arguing in favor of debt relief for public servants.
As for climate policies, Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement, an international treaty aimed at mitigating the effects of global warming, near the beginning of his presidency. He relaxed environmental regulations, such as removing regulations around drilling for fossil fuels. His argument was that the rules were stunting job growth.
Harris pushes for the progressive Green New Deal, a proposal to combat climate change and reduce economic inequality, and supports the banning of fracking and offshore drilling. She also backed rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, which the Biden Administration re-entered on its first day in office.
In terms of health care issues, Trump’s focus is affordable and quality health care. He also aims to make healthcare more transparent, ensuring that patients fully understand the costs and risks of procedures.
Harris’ main agenda is to reduce costs for health care for American families. Her proposals include expanding private health insurance coverage with the Affordable Care Act, reducing drug costs, and medical debt relief.
